My dog, the sleuth
Thursday, Aug 18 2005 | 1 comments

I took Truffle on a walk last night that started off very normal and escalated quickly into a very bizarre experience. Being a dog, she has a crazy scent receptor nose. We were walking down the sideqalk, and she got on the scent of something seriously intruiging. She was walking around in circles with her nose pressed firm against the ground. Backtracking. Lunging forward. Going in all directions. As I stood there getting pulled along as an innocent bystander, I started becoming very Nancy Drew about the situation. Maybe there are drugs in that house. Maybe there is a dead body under that flower bed. Maybe, maybe, maybe 100 ridiculous maybes in the 3 - 4 minutes Truffle was on the hunt.

And then the hunt was over. The smell?

Illicit bread on someone's lawn for the birds.

Truffle happily picked up a big honking chunk of bread in her mouth and started moving back towards the house, angling her head in such a way to try to hide the bread from me. Like maybe if I didn't see it, I wouldn't know she had found it and she could happily run into my bed and devour it. As I leaned down towards her to knock the bread out of her mouth, she moved her head further and further away until she was currled into a very precarious position with her head pressed against her back thigh. All while still peeking at me as if to say "What? I don't have anything in my mouth. What are you talking about? What bread?"

So much for pet detective Truffle.

how funny is that... i can see it in my head.

dogs are the funniest thing like that.

often, my dog will pace and pace and pace sniffing all the while until he comes upon a treat that he has hidden in a corner after i have handed him without being thoughtful enough to let him track it down himself, and then run away with it in hopes i don't notice he's found the treat I JUST GAVE HIM.
