yahoo likes me enough to pay me

i wondered if i should even make this post, because i know focus groups aren't usually supposed to talk about the supposedly new thing they are "testing". but since the whole thrust of the focus group was "help us explain the phenomenon of viral marketing / evangelism, i can only assume yahoo would have made their point by me making this post.

i went to a focus group about yahoo's new search engine (check it out for yourself at search.yahoo.com, see look, i did exactly as they expected), but it was really interesting in a couple of senses:

  1. it was held at a fancy schmancy hotel in downtown chicago. in this nice suite. with lots and lots of food
  2. they told us off the bat that they hated the idea of the conference room with one way window type focus group
  3. they didn't tell us till the end why we were there

it was really interesting, exploring this idea of selling, being a consultant, with no personal reward. the psychology of why we seek validation, need to be cool-hunters, early adopters.

oh yeah, and the muffins were really good.
